Spam Management
Managing spam messages with Outlook Express
Our mail servers use sophisitcated spam detection software that is updated in real time. Every incoming message is automatically subjected to numerous tests to identify those messages that are spam. This is an automated process and no human is looking at your mail during the spam filtering process.
When spam is detected in our system, the subject line of the message is altered to begin with *****SPAM***** which allows you to manage the spam messages more efficiently.
While our spam filtering is highly accurate, there is always a chance that legitimate mail could be marked as spam. Because of this, we mark the mail and deliver it so YOU can decide if it is spam or not.
One of the best ways to manage those spam messages is to dump them in a separate folder. Rather than clutter your inbox with the spam, we suggest you create a filter or message rule in your email program that will automatically move the messages marked as spam to a folder of your choosing, allowing you to review them at your leisure.
All modern email programs allow you to filter messages. Outlook Express is the most popular email program, so we've included instructions to set up a message rule to automatically move the spam to a separate folder:
How To Create Message Rules in Outlook Express
To create a message rule to filter spam messages, follow these steps:
On the Tools menu, click Message Rules, Mail...
Check "Where the Subject line contains specific words"
Check "Move it to the specified folder"
In the third box, click the blue underlined contains specific words
- enter *****SPAM***** in the top box, click Add
Click the blue underlined word specified
- If you don't have a spam folder, click "New Folder"
- Enter SPAM as folder name and click OK
- Click the SPAM folder to highlight it, click OK
You can change the name of the rule of you want - "SPAM filter" would be descriptive
Click "OK", Click "OK" again
Now all the mail marked as spam will be placed in your SPAM folder for further review and deletion.
What do I do when spam slips through and isn't marked?
One of the things you can do is report the spam through spamcop.net.
This is a free service used by thousands of ISP's (including us) and when a spam message is reported by anyone, that message is added to a live database used by our system to detect spam. This is just one of hundreds of checks done by our mail server to determine if a message is legitimate.
