Getting Ahead in
Keyword Optimization
We said you were going to focus on one or two keywords (or key phrases). But what if you really want to promote more than this? You can do so, but you will do it one page at a time. For example:
page 1 - optimized for keyword 1 and 2
page 2 - optimized for keyword 3 and 4
page 3 - optimized for keyword 5 and 6
page 4 - optimized for keyword 7 and 8
etc.
You can't effectively optimize a page for very many keywords, so we'll stick to our two most important keywords for now. Once you've finished your first page, you can work on additional pages as your time and energies permit.
Optimizing your site for your keywords is a very tricky thing. You want to put your keywords in the right places, but but you have to maintain just the right balance between your keywords and the rest of the page.
Important places to put your keywords include:
page file name
Title text
Body text
Hyperlink text
alt tags
If you use your keywords too much, your page may be penalized for 'spamming' the search engines - but if you don't use them enough, your page won't rank well for your keywords.
So how do you know how and when to use your keywords? There are some free tools available that will help you do just that. Here is a good one:
Keyword Density and Prominence Tool
Once you've adjusted your pages to pass the Page Critic's tests, or whatever tool you use, you're ready to continue!
Tip: Use your keywords as the file name of your page, separating the words with dashes. This is the only was Google recognizes separate words. You'll get a huge benefit from this. Example:
polymorphic-ringtones.html <-- GREAT
polymorphic_ringtones.html <-- worse
polymorphicringtones.html <-- worse
(Did you notice the names of the pages in this article?)
